![]() ![]() Updating the atime every time a file is read causes a lot of usually-unnecessary IO, slowing everything down. And to sort by time, add the -t flag to ls. You can use ls -lu to do this, although I prefer to use ls -l -time=atime (which should be supported in almost all modern Linux distributions) because I don't use it often, and when I do I can remember it better. So, generally, what you want to see is the atime of a file. ctime - updated when the file or its metadata (owner, permissions) change. This is the "default" file time in most cases. mtime - updated when the file contents change. There are three timestamps normally recorded: In the next chapter of the Terminal Basics series, you'll learn about creating files in Linux command line.ĭo let me know if you have questions or suggestions. This depends on exactly what you mean by "opened", but in general, yes. Most Linux commands have numerous options. If you want to see the stats of a directory, use the option -d. If you use the ls command with a directory path, it will show its content. Combine it with the long listing option and you can see the file size in recognizable formats. The ls command has a human-readable option -h. For example, in the examples above, the services file has size 12813 bytes.Īs a normal computer user, it makes more sense to see the file size in KB, MB and GB. The long listing option -l shows the file size. You can make them go away and still show other hidden files using the option -A instead of -a. It will be better to create a working scenario on your system so that you can try things and see similar results, as shown in this tutorial. This Terminal Basics tutorial series uses a hands-on approach where you learn things by doing them. You should know just enough basics to get your way around it at this stage. You can even sort the output based on those criteria. You can see the file size, the time it was created, whether it is a file or directory, and file permissions. There is more to just listing what a directory consists of. You can think of ls as a short form for list. The ls command in Linux is used for listing the contents of directories.

Nautical technology made the scuttlebutt obsolete, but the term endured, becoming a catch-all word for unfounded rumors. The scuttlebutt was really the only place to do it. Since sailors could congregate around the fountain, it became a place to finally catch up and exchange gossip, making scuttlebutt synonymous with casual conversation. A scuttlebutt was therefore a hatch in the cask.īecause sailors usually received orders from shouting supervisors, talking amongst themselves was discouraged. The cask was known as a butt, while scuttle was taken from the French word escoutilles and means hatch or hole. It was later used as the name of the drinking fountain found on a ship or in a Naval installation. But what exactly is scuttlebutt, and why did it become associated with idle water cooler talk?Īccording to Merriam-Webster, a scuttlebutt referred to a cask on sailing ships in the 1800s that contained drinking water for those on board. We can easily infer that scuttlebutt is a slang term for information or maybe even gossip. “What’s the scuttlebutt?” you’d say, for example, and then they’d reply with the solicited scuttlebutt. The poop deck is the highest deck of the ship, typically at the stern.Īll of this is to say that regardless of what scuttlebutt actually means, if your dog is scooting its bottom across your floors, you should look into an ointment or cream for that. Poop comes from the Latin, puppis meaning ‘ship’, particularly the back or ‘stern’. It’s the sailor’s equivalent to water cooler talk.īy the way, poop deck has nothing to do with human waste. And that’s where it took on its euphemistic meaning. The scuttlebutt was typically placed at the poop deck of the ship for general use by crew members to gather and gossip around. When you put scuttle and butt together you end up with ‘a hatched cask used for holding drinking water’. ![]() This use of the term butt comes from the Latin buttis-which is also where we get the word bottle.īy the way, have you ever wondered why butchers call the shoulder of a pig the Boston butt? Its because pork shoulders in America were often shipped around the country from New England butchers. If we use the term a bit more loosely, it could just mean ‘cask’ or ‘container’. It equals 4 barrels, 2 hogsheads or 126 gallons 3. So two buttocks make up one butt.īut more importantly to the term at hand, butt is also an old unit of measurement for wine casks. The suffix -ock is an Old Saxon way of making words diminutive-similar to how a hillock is a ‘small hill’ or bullock is a ‘young or castrated bull’. By the way, some people think butt is short for buttocks, but that’s not exactly correct. How do you know if you’re talking about a hatchway or a scuttle? Well, “hatches of a smaller kind are distinguished by the name of scuttles” 2.Īnd on a ship, butt has the same general meaning of ‘end’ we all use it for-whether it be the wider ‘end’ of plank of wood, the fat ‘end’ of a rifle or the plump ‘end’ of a human. ![]() Scuttle may refer to anything from a porthole on the side of a ship to sometimes even a doorway. Some players don't even leave the station they make money by playing that single market. The majority of players buy their goods from the game's main trade hub in Jita IV Moon 4's Caldari Navy Assembly Plant station, so it's here that the highest trade turnover can be found. The good thing is, checkpoints are spread out in a fair and reasonable amount. This mini-boss was deceptively frustrating. But then again, this game was designed by only one person, so I will cut them some slack there… Just a little. Some of these enemy locations definitely soured the overall experience. Which practically forced me to spend my hard-earned currency on a shield-attack item, just to cheese through it. I got completely stuck on this one mini-boss encounter with moving platforms and insta-kill spikes underneath, all the stuff. That being said, some of the enemy locations were obviously placed in areas you just knew the developer was giving you a hard time with. It really is ultra addictive progressing through a seemingly insurmountable obstacle in this game. Though that was Cyber Shadow’s biggest drawcard for me learning the ropes in boss battles, whilst also figuring out the best way to advance through a tricky enemy and platforming setup. Well, at least that was my experience with it, maybe I actually do just suck at these games. The bosses themselves are consistently difficult and challenging throughout, but they’re never outright cheap or anything like that. After a few attempts, you’ll start recognising their attack patterns and notice the tide slowly shifting in your favour… I consider myself quite good at these types of games too, but Cyber Shadow still got me a royally spanked. Because quite honestly… I probably wouldn’t be able to finish this game for the review, let’s be real. Now since Shadow has unlimited lives and the fact that his currency accumulates after a failed attempt, you needn’t worry about how many times Shadow bites the dust. Ninja Gaiden’s Formula… With A Modern Touch Another has insta-death spikes that’ll start rushing towards him until he escapes their reach. One level, in particular, has faulty electrical wiring which can damage Shadow if he’s not careful. So you could say that the environment itself is an opponent, and that actually is the case in some areas. There’s a heap of precise platforming involved in these levels, and the obstacles normally have an enemy placed somewhere in a VERY uncomfortable spot to deal with. Shadow progresses through a series of ‘chapters’, fighting gauntlets of enemies, whilst taking down two bosses at the halfway and endpoints of the levels. ![]() I will keep looking around, but right now I will probably pick up the Mecha ship that I like and the DFC Trident Battleship you suggested and see how they feel in hand with the rest of my growing fleet.Shadow’s fireball attack is useful for dealing with pesky enemies up above. but I really like it, so I might just use it anyway. I did ask some DFC players here and apparently Resistance Trident Battleship is around 15cm, depending on how you build it as there are a few options in the build. The Dropfleet Destroyers are a bit small I think, but I will keep them in mind for the light cruiser ships of the Tau fleet later. I am sure I can find a use for it later even if I don't use it here. but that's something about the mini itself so I might pick one up just to check it out. That's not bad, but my current Cruiser-equivalent minis are about 9cm long each, so it might not look big enough compared to them. But I did find a review of this one that listed it as 'between 4 and 5 inches', so that put its at 10-13cm. I saw the dimensions on Amazon, but I think that those numbers describe the box that it comes in, for shipping purposes. The Mecha ship is from Space Battleship Yamato, I think. This is what I am using so far as Tau proxy ships. ![]() Those standing somewhere between his legs will find the attacks virtually impossible to dodge.
